If you don’t have plans for Monday night and aren’t in the mood for the usual, expensive movie lineup, you should head straight to Eichenstraße. In the former depot of the Vienna Local Railways, now known as Gleis//Garten, you’ll find one of the coolest combinations of culture and cuisine that Vienna currently has to offer.
A green oasis in the old depot

The Gleis//Garten is Vienna’s first true market hall and a pretty awesome project in a revitalized carriage house. Under real palm trees and plenty of wood accents, gastronomy, culture, and a bit of a vacation vibe come together here. It’s not a classic restaurant, but a place to gather, where you pick up your food from various international stalls and enjoy it together at massive wooden tables.

In cooperation with the legendary VOLXkino, the market hall regularly transforms into a movie theater. The films shown often relate to the food on offer or come from the countries of the restaurateurs.
Recently, films like the comedy “Womit haben wir das verdient” or the French-Japanese film “Umami” starring Gérard Depardieu have been shown on the XXL screen. The program changes weekly and ranges from Austrian productions to international independent films.
Feasting from Morocco to Japan

The best part of the concept: you won’t go hungry. While the film is playing, you can grab a bite at the various food stalls. Whether it’s Moroccan tagine, fresh sushi from Sajado, Neapolitan pizza, or hearty burgers —there’s something for everyone here.
Prices for a main course usually range between 10 and 16 euros. There’s a special treat for students: if you get a drink at the bar, you often get free popcorn with it.

Besides the Monday movie screenings, there’s always something going on in the hall. Every Sunday, you can really fill your belly at brunch, while live bands often provide the perfect background music. A real highlight is the in-house brewery: Vienna Craft Beer is brewed right on site in huge kettles, so your beer certainly won’t get any fresher than this.
Important to know:

Performances usually take place on Mondays at 7:00 PM. The Gleis//Garten is open on Mondays from 4:00 PM to midnight, so you can come earlier to browse the stalls at your leisure.
