Where excavators and cranes are now laying the foundation for Vienna’s most spectacular major cultural project of the 21st century, an impassable imperial floodplain forest stretched out two and a half centuries ago. The contrast could hardly be more radical: Once upon a time, makeshift wooden shacks clattered in the mud of the Danube floodplains, where a wooden puppet wearing a jester’s cap mocked the authorities; starting in November 2027, 1,800 people will gather every evening in a state-of-the-art theater to watch life-size mechanical elephants and giraffes stride through the auditorium to the sounds of an orchestra. But appearances can be deceiving: The new “Theater im Prater” does not break with the amusement park’s history—it brings a 260-year-old cycle full circle
In the spring of 1766, Emperor Joseph II handed over the imperial hunting grounds in Vienna’s Danube floodplains to the city’s residents for recreational use. The once-aristocratic wooded area quickly developed into the Vienna Wurstelprater, where carnival tents, jugglers’ stages, and puppet theaters entertained the people.
Toward the end of the 19th century, entertainment in the Prater flourished: In 1895, “Venice in Vienna” was established as one of the world’s first amusement parks, where even Johann Strauss conducted in its open-air theaters. In April 1945, severe war damage reduced the historic stages to rubble and ashes, so that for decades the neighborhood was dominated primarily by carousels and cotton-candy stands.
100-million-project brings grand theater to Leopoldstadt

The city is now fully embracing this long-forgotten tradition: Since the groundbreaking on October 27, 2025, a new theater has been under construction at the intersection of Kratky-Baschik-Weg and Zufahrtsstraße. The privately funded project by ATG Entertainment costs around 100 million euros and marks the first new theater construction of this scale in Vienna in over 100 years. The joint design by the architectural firms Haworth Tompkins from London and Dietrich Untertrifaller will seat exactly 1,800 spectators.
