In the ninth district, the massive structures for the most important public transit upgrade of our decade are already in place. The U2xU5 subway megaproject is bringing Vienna’s first fully automated subway line underground, resulting in massive growth for the network. Although the state-of-the-art Frankhplatz station will be structurally completed in 2026, the complex technology required for train operations still needs time to be finalized.
Many are wondering what driverless operation means in practice. Initially, the trains will run through the tunnels completely without a driver, as a central computer system will take over full control of the trains. The trains will brake and accelerate with millimeter precision at the new platform doors.
These massive glass walls along the tracks will only open once the train comes to a stop directly in front of them, ensuring the highest level of safety for passengers. In addition, this technology allows for extremely short intervals of less than 90 seconds during the morning rush hour. So you’ll never have to wait long on the platform again, since the traditional turnaround times at the terminal station will also be completely eliminated.
The true revolution in the rail network
While the new U5 line will branch off at the Rathaus station in the future, it will significantly relieve pressure on the existing system. As a result, the historic Alte AKH will finally have a direct connection to the subway network, even though the heavily frequented campus was previously accessible only by tram. Consequently, students and local residents will save valuable minutes when transferring to trams 43 and 44.

Finally, construction will proceed rapidly after the first phase goes into operation in 2030. The line will then extend through Arne-Karlsson Park and the Michelbeuern-AKH station all the way to Hernals. As a result, the driverless U5 will significantly relieve traffic on the heavily congested Hernalser Hauptstraße and offer entirely new transfer options.

If you’d like to test this technology for yourself beforehand, your best bet is to head straight to the Volkstheater U3 station. There, on the mezzanine level, the free U2xU5 Information Center awaits you with an interactive model of the tunnel boring machine. You can also touch real rock samples from underground before Vienna’s most modern trains begin regular service.
