For months, a mysterious noise robbed residents of Vienna’s Sonnwendviertelof their sleep. Time and again, in the early morning hours, a long, eerie honking echoed through the night. What initially sounded like a train conductor’s intentional signal quickly became a recurring topic of discussion among the neighborhood groups near the main station. Sleepless nights and understandable anger eventually led to public protests and a petition. It remained unclear for a long time who or what was behind the noise until the ÖBB got to the bottom of the matter.
Technical malfunctions in the early morning hours
The investigation revealed that there was no human error involved, but rather an unusual technical malfunction. The cause of the nighttime disturbance was “Talent” series railcars parked at the nearby storage yard.Between 3 and 5 a.m., of all times, these vehicles are brought out of standby mode to prepare for the upcoming early morning service.
When the compressed air system is activated during system startup, a defect in individual control elements caused the signal horn—the so-called “macrophone” —to sound on its own. Instead of an intentional safety alert, the horn thus sounded completely unintentionally and at full volume across the tracks, directly into the adjacent residential areas.
A quick fix for a quiet night at the main station

Once the cause had been clearly identified, ÖBB responded immediately with concrete countermeasures to restore the usual nighttime peace and quiet to residents living near the main station. The affected train sets were gradually taken out of service and underwent thorough repairs in the workshops.
Until all control components have been completely replaced, officials are parking the affected trains as a precaution on remote track sections away from residential areas. Thanks to this swift action, the eerie nighttime horn blaring in the Sonnwendviertel is finally a thing of the past. Residents can breathe a sigh of relief and enjoy their nights undisturbed once again, while rail service (hopefully) runs on schedule as usual in the mornings.
