About 150 years after its opening in 1876, one of Austria’s most historic coffeehouses is set to make a comeback. Since March 16, 2026, the tall wooden doors of Café Central have been closed as the premises undergo the most extensive renovation of its recent history. Just in time for the anniversary season, regular operations are now set to resume in full during the winter of 2026. We’re eagerly awaiting the exact date and will, of course, let you know as soon as we find out!
Major Renovation for the 150th Anniversary
Writers and thinkers such as Sigmund Freud, Arthur Schnitzler, and Stefan Zweig spent countless hours among the columns at Herrengasse 14. Now, the original Thonet coffeehouse chairs are being painstakingly restored by hand, while the historic building systems in Vienna’s 1st district are being renovated at the same time.

Melange at the “Decentral” pop-up

Fortunately, anyone who doesn’t want to go without their Melange during the months-long renovation phase need only walk a few steps further. Just a 150-meter walk away, this historic establishment operates its temporary location, “Decentral,” right at Freyung 3. There, the waitstaff serve the usual pastries and specialty coffees daily from 8:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., starting at 6 euros.
The temporary location in the Ferstel Passage captures the classic coffeehouse atmosphere well, even though the original arcaded courtyard is currently still closed off. According to official statements from the management, the schedule remains on track, so the reopening will take place between November 2026 and December 2026. Until the final reopening, this temporary location remains the go-to spot seven days a week for authentic Viennese coffeehouse enjoyment.
