Are you feeling the chills? The Vienna Planetarium at Oswald-Thomas-Platz 1 in the 2nd district will surprise you on October 31, 2026, starting at 8:00 p.m., with a real nightmare among the galaxies. Where you’d normally cruise peacefully through the Milky Way, the “Cosmic Horror” program awaits you this Halloween. The show combines the fascination of infinity with the dark abysses of the cosmos, delivering the perfect blend of goosebumps and astronomy right in the heart of the Prater.
From a Wooden Structure to a High-Tech Sky: The History of the Vienna Planetarium

It all began nearly a century ago. As early as 1927, Vienna opened the very first planetarium outside of Germany—at the time, it was still a temporary wooden structure on Maria-Theresien-Platz. Already in its first year, hundreds of thousands of people marveled at Carl Zeiss’s projection technology, which was revolutionary at the time. After being closed and destroyed due to the war, the institution finally found its current permanent home in 1964, right next to the Giant Ferris Wheel.
State-of-the-art laser projection instead of a vintage projector
Today, you no longer look through dusty lenses, but into a 20-meter dome with crystal-clear 8K resolution. Eight high-performance projectors transport you into space more realistically than ever before. It is precisely this system that ensures, on Halloween, that the vastness of space closes in menacingly above your heads.
When the darkness of space comes to life

Forget cheesy plastic skeletons: In “Cosmic Horror,” you’ll explore the unknown, inspired by the eerie realms of H. P. Lovecraft. Pulsars, black holes, and endless void merge with atmospheric sounds to create an immersive experience guaranteed to send shivers down your spine.
You can easily reach the event by public transit via Praterstern using the U1, U2, Schnellbahn, or tram line 5. If you’re driving, take Ausstellungsstraße and park directly in the Pratergarage.
