When art lovers think of Vienna’s Albertina, the world-famous masterpieces by Dürer and Monet usually come to mind immediately. But few know that this renowned museum is housed in one of the Habsburgs’ most magnificent former residences.
Far removed from the typical daytime museum visit, these historic rooms take on a magic all their own once darkness falls. Anyone who steps into the state rooms away from audio guides and the daily exhibition routine is suddenly immersed in Vienna’s vibrant imperial history—a magic that can soon be experienced in a very special way at an exclusive Halloween concert by Candlelight.

250 Years of the Albertina: A Royal Anniversary
This year, the Albertina is celebrating a very special milestone: its 250th anniversary. This impressive historical anniversary offers the perfect occasion to rediscover the magnificent Habsburg state rooms in all their elegance.
Once upon a time, these stately halls were not used merely for viewing art, but served as an impressive backdrop for glittering imperial ceremonies and prestigious receptions. Even today, the architecture and the opulent ambiance still exude the spirit of the former Danube Monarchy.
A visit during this festive year is a wonderful reminder that this palace itself is at least as great a work of art as the valuable collections it houses today.

The Musensaal: The Heart of the State Rooms
The undisputed crown jewel of the Habsburg state rooms is the spectacular Musen Hall. Beginning in 1822, it was lavishly redesigned by architect Joseph Kornhäusel for Archduke Carl—the famous military commander and victor over Napoleon at the Battle of Aspern. The room owes its illustrious name to the masterful sculptural cycle depicting Apollo and the nine Muses, created by Joseph Klieber, which majestically adorns the walls.
But the true secret of its atmosphere is the light. The hall is dominated by five massive crystal chandeliers holding a total of 258 candles. This unique historic lighting bathes the room in a warm, golden glow and transforms it into a breathtaking, virtually perfect setting for intimate musical experiences.
And it is precisely this magical atmosphere that will provide the setting for an extraordinary highlight on October 23: An intimate Candlelight concert will bring eerily beautiful Halloween classics directly to the Musensaal. In this incomparable setting, where the glow of countless candles accompanies the classical melodies, imperial splendor and a mystical autumnal atmosphere merge into an unforgettable experience.
