Vienna is full of magnificent buildings and above-ground sights, but the real secrets often lie deep beneath the asphalt. One of the most fascinating relics of the postwar era is hidden completely out of sight beneath an ordinary underground parking garage in the 3rd district: a gigantic nuclear bunker for around 1,200 people right in the heart of Vienna. For a long time, access to this so-called ABC bunker was strictly prohibited. It was built during the Cold War specifically for select government personnel to provide safe shelter in the event of nuclear, biological, or chemical attacks.
From an elite shelter to a time capsule museum
Back then, the facility was designed to ensure survival for exactly 14 days. Everything here today seems frozen in time: the spartan dormitories are furnished with bare-bones bunk beds, and simple plates and mugs sit on the tables. Even toilet paper was strictly rationed—for the planned two weeks, there was only one single-ply roll per person.

Meter-thick steel doors and authentic glimpses inside

Today, in 2026, the “Association for the Research and Documentation of Underground Structures” is opening this oppressive world to the public for the first time. The approximately 90-minute “Tour K” takes visitors five meters below ground.
You’ll pass through heavy steel airlocks, learn details about the 1950s air distribution systems, and hear in-depth background information on the threat situation at the time. Guided tours currently take place only about once a month, and groups are limited to a maximum of 25 people, so booking early is advisable.
Since the interior temperature remains a cool 10 °C year-round, be sure to dress warmly and wear closed-toe, sturdy shoes. Due to the cramped conditions, the absolute ban on photography and filming during the tour is just as strict as the age restriction. Participation is limited to those 14 years of age and older, and tickets (adults €25, reduced rate €21) can only be purchased online in advance.
📍 Meeting point: Markhofgasse 21 (intersection with Herma-Bauma-Gasse), 1030 Vienna
🎟️ Admission: Adults €25 | Reduced (under 18) €21
⏳ Duration: approx. 90 minutes (advance booking required)
📅 Dates: Currently about once a month (check online)
