Haven’t we been dreaming of this for a long time? Music and dancing in the open air on the Danube Island in Vienna – this is now becoming a reality. With the “Free Spaces 2025” project, a legally regulated area in the middle of the river for various events is being created for the first time. We tell you everything you need to know about the Danube Island as a club.
Partying on the Danube: what’s it all about?
The “Free Spaces 2025” project is being initiated by the City of Vienna in collaboration with the Vienna Club Commission. This means that future music and cultural events on the Danube Island will take place without commercial pressure. Parties can then take place legally in public spaces and without noise complaints – true to the motto “club culture without clubs”.
The area on the Danube Island will be clearly defined. Interested organizers can now even apply for funding: The project owners will support artistic programs with up to 3000 euros. The aim is to create a club culture free of consumerism in the middle of nature.
Danube Island as a club: what happens there?
” Club culture is an essential part of our city,” said City Councillor for Culture Veronica Kaup-Hasler, explaining the motivation behind the project. People should be able to meet each other and artistic experiments should be encouraged. Various music collectives and creative artists have been looking for a space for their ideas for a long time.
The Danube Island as an open-air club has been tested in several pilot phases over the last two years. The organizers have repeatedly made improvements, for example there are now mobile toilet facilities and soon a fixed power supply as well as facilitations from the authorities.
Open-air summer: What’s next?
Interested music organizers can now apply for the space here. The open-air parties on the Danube Island are set to start as early as this summer – however, this does not include concerts, only DJ sets.
A minimum of 200 and a maximum of 1000 people are permitted here, and events can take place between 14:00 and 23:00. Admission and prices at the bar will be based on donations. Nothing stands in the way of the first raves on the Danube Island – let the Viennese party summer begin!
