The Origin of the Name: Where the Dragon Legend Began
The cave’s massive entrance was visible from afar to the people of the region centuries ago. When brave souls explored the dark interior back then, they came across enormous, unknown skeletal remains. According to popular belief, there was no doubt about it: these had to be the bones of dragons! From these discoveries arose the famous legend of the “Dragon Slayer of Mixnitz, ” which still gives the town its mystical name to this day.
Prehistoric Significance: A Window into the Paleolithic Era
Science later revealed the true secret of the giant bones. They came from extinct cave bears (Ursus spelaeus). Tens of thousands of these animals used the enormous cave as a shelter and winter quarters over the course of millennia. But that’s not all: tool finds and hearths prove that Paleolithic hunters also sought refuge in the cave some 30,000 to 50,000 years ago. As a result, the Dragon Cave is considered one of Austria’s most significant archaeological sites.
Perfect for Hikers: How to Make the Most of Your Hike to the Dragon’s Cave
The trail to the cave is challenging, but it rewards hikers with untamed nature and magnificent views.
- Start & Ascent: From the parking lot in Mixnitz (also easily accessible by train), the hiking trail leads steeply uphill for about 1.5 hours. In the upper section, rock sections secured with chains provide a “climbing” experience—sure-footedness and sturdy footwear are a must!
- Spotting ibex: Keep an eye out at the Röthelstein, as curious ibex often cross the rock faces.
- Cave tour: For nature conservation reasons (to protect endangered bat species), access to the interior of the cave is permitted exclusively as part of guided tours from May through September. Advance registration with the municipality of Pernegg is mandatory.
