Just under an hour’s drive from Vienna lies a geological rarity that was accidentally uncovered during quarrying work as early as 1845. At first, the purple rock was largely ignored, but today it is home to the world’s largest exposed banded amethyst vein at Amethystwelt Maissau. When temperatures in the city rise, this area in the Kamptal offers a cool alternative to the classic outdoor pool.
Before exploring the expansive grounds, be sure to visit the historic exhibition tunnel on hot summer days. The temperature there remains a constant 16 to 18 degrees. During a one-hour guided tour, you’ll descend 12 meters underground, where you’ll get an up-close view of the impressive amethyst vein, which is over 40 meters long.
In addition, the adjacent Gem House houses a collection of international minerals. For example, you can touch a real meteorite from outer space or examine rare moon rocks. There’s also a special exhibition currently on display featuring crystal skulls, showcasing over 30 artifacts from Mayan culture.

Cooling Off and Outdoor Activities
Once you’re back on the surface, the lush Amethyst Park, with its many trees, provides plenty of shade. While mental relaxation is the main focus in the Garden of Power, there’s a large water play area for younger guests to cool off. Austria’s first chakra marble run, featuring seven different stations, is also a major attraction.
If you’d like to get hands-on, you can stock up on the right prospecting tools at the large treasure-hunting area to search for imported stones. Even if it rains unexpectedly, your hands will stay dry, since the adjacent gold-panning area is completely covered. Depending on which package you choose at the ticket counter, you’ll pan for fool’s gold, shark teeth, or colorful gemstones from the sand.
Animal guests from the capital
For several years now, animal residents from Vienna have been spending their summer getaways in the Waldviertel—more specifically, the site partners directly with the Wien Cobenzl estate. From April through October , goats, chickens, and rabbits live in the Animal Adventure Forest and can be fed via special animal feed dispensers. Ultimately, this concept rounds out the excursion and offers a successful blend of nature and geology.
