Fancy a trip back in time? Vienna combines old and new in many places in the city. But you’ll find a special secret in the west. Directly on Linzer Straße in Hütteldorf you will find the oldest preserved residential building in Vienna. The Fuhrmannhaus combines past and present in a unique way. A visit to Linzer Straße 404 is a must for anyone who appreciates genuine Viennese flair, contemporary architecture and a glass of wine. We’ll tell you exactly what it’s all about. Time for a visit to the oldest western house in the city, which is still alive and inviting today!
Roots back to the Middle Ages and beyond
Vienna’s oldest residential building is located at a historic traffic junction. As early as the 12th century, the Poststraße, today’s Linzer Straße, passed here as the main connection to the west. Archaeological evidence points to a former Roman fortification and medieval settlement. A small barred window in the inner courtyard even dates back to before 1500.
After the second Turkish siege, the house was extensively rebuilt in 1687. The original wrought-iron banisters with a Turkish head still bear witness to that era. But most of the special details you see today date back to the year of this reconstruction.
The house changed hands several times over the centuries: after periods of monasticism with the Barnabites in the 17th and 18th centuries, the Fuhrmann family acquired the property in the 19th century. They built up a renowned wagon business – since then the name has been the program here.
From a farm to a wine tavern

Today, the Fuhrmannhaus is more than just a journey through time. Within its historic walls, a typical Viennese tavern now combines hospitality and history. Where noblemen used to meet and carriages passed through the archways, neighbors and visitors now meet in what is perhaps Vienna’s most atmospheric wine tavern. Instead of stylish rooftop bars, this restaurant offers you a genuine, rustic feel.
The halls are regularly used for concerts, readings and cultural events. As is the relaxed inner courtyard, where various Viennese markets take place: These include arts and crafts, farmers’ and Christmas markets. The original frescoes in the ballroom are a particular treasure. With all these small and large features, the Fuhrmannhaus is one of the few historic event venues in the west of Vienna.
