If you live or visit Vienna, you are lucky enough to have some of the most beautiful buildings in Europe right on your doorstep. And we don’t just mean the numerous magnificent buildings in Vienna itself. Because just a two-hour train ride away in Graz lies the architectural jewel that even many Austrians have never seen: the famous double spiral staircase in Graz Castle.
Double spiral staircases – i.e. two intertwined but separate flights of stairs – are an absolute rarity worldwide. The Graz version, built around 1499, is considered one of the most beautiful and best-preserved of its kind. It is located in the castle, a historic building complex that was originally built under Emperor Frederick III from 1438 and later extended by his son Maximilian I.
Architecture with a unique significance
The staircase itself is a small marvel of architecture. It winds upwards in a spiral, divides, continues separately and then reunites. This ingenious play of separation and reunion has earned the staircase its affectionate nickname: “The Staircase of Reconciliation”. The people of Graz say that those who part on the stairs will meet again at the end – a beautiful symbol of friendship, love or simply life itself.
Historically, the staircase was originally part of the imperial residence and mainly served representative purposes. Today, it is freely accessible and a popular photo motif for visitors from all over the world.
Open daily and free of charge for you
Best of all, admission to the double spiral staircase is completely free! You can marvel at this architectural gem every day from 7:30 am to 8:00 pm. Graz Castle is located in the heart of the old town, just a few minutes’ walk from the main square. If you like, you can visit the staircase as part of a walk through the UNESCO-protected old town and discover other highlights such as the Graz Clock Tower or the Landhaus.
A day trip from Vienna to Graz is not only worthwhile because of the charming old town and the excellent gastronomy, but also because of this unique architectural treasure. The double spiral staircase is a real must-see for anyone who is passionate about history, architecture or simply special places!
