Anyone traveling along the Danube by S-Bahn or bicycle will immediately notice the imposing defensive tower high above the treetops. There is a touch of history in the air, as the thick walls have guarded the Danube Valley for over 900 years. But appearances can be deceiving. After all, the gates of this medieval structure are completely locked to the public. We’re talking about the historic Greifenstein Castle. It sits majestically atop a striking rock at the northernmost point of the Vienna Woods.
After a devastating fire in 2006 destroyed the interior, the entire site is now privately owned. For this reason, there are currently no regular guided tours or cultural events. The entire complex has a Romanesque core dating from the eleventh century. However, it was completely renovated by Johann I of Liechtenstein in the Romantic style of Historicism. Previously, it served as an important defensive structure against attackers, whereas afterward it even housed a popular castle restaurant. There is therefore no need to buy a ticket for your trip, as viewing the site costs you exactly zero euros.

Fantastic hiking trails in the surrounding area
If you lace up your hiking boots, the surrounding countryside offers fantastic routes in the Vienna Woods Biosphere Reserve. The so-called Tempelberg Loop is particularly popular with day-trippers. It starts right at the Greifenstein-Altenberg train station. You’ll hike up to the historic Tempelbergwarte, pass the Hadersfeld Obelisk, and eventually return near the fortress. Although you can’t go inside, the view from the trails down to the river is well worth it. You’re always guaranteed a great photo of the old fortifications here.
Stress-free travel from the city
Getting there, however, could hardly be simpler. The connection is perfectly set up for a spontaneous weekend getaway from the capital. First, simply hop on the ÖBB S-Bahn S40 at Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof or board at Spittelau. The ride takes just under 25 minutes, for example. Alternatively, you can drive comfortably via the A22 Danube River Highway, where you can park conveniently right below the complex.
