Making it onto a ranking is one thing, but when 466 international researchers analyze nearly 150,000 data sets, things get serious. Originally, 3,400 locations worldwide were on the list, but only the top 251 municipalities made it into the final evaluation after months of scrutiny.
The results of the Happy City Index 2026 were officially presented at the British Parliament in London, with the support of MP Dr. Rosena Allin-Khan. Behind this massive data analysis are the Paris-based Institute for Quality of Life and the London-based Happy City Hub. Copenhagen took the top spot this year with an impressive 6,954 points.

Top 10 Cities at a Glance

This secures the Danube metropolis a firm place in the so-called Gold category, which exclusively brings together the top 50 most livable places. According to the researchers, this is not purely about competition, but about sustainable urban development and genuine quality of life for residents. The ranking is based on strict criteria and draws on exactly 64 measurable indicators.
To determine the rankings, experts scrutinize six major core areas: politics, the education system, the economy, health, mobility, and civil society. The fact that our public transit runs frequently and we enjoy a high level of safety in our own neighborhoods directly contributes to our score. A reliable healthcare system and a focus on a functioning economy are also factored into the rigorous evaluation.
