Anyone who has strolled through the Second District in recent weeks has surely noticed that there’s a lot of digging going on at Kratky-Baschik-Weg. The massive excavators aren’t digging here for a new roller coaster. Rather, they’re excavating the pit for the largest privately funded cultural project Austria has seen in over 100 years. We’ve taken a close look at the plans. Here, we’ll share all the hard facts with you.
Not a minor renovation, but a massive new construction

The construction companies are building a massive new structure from the ground up. The international operator ATG Entertainment is building on that very same vast open space. Right where the tracks of the Olympia Loop had stood for years.
The official groundbreaking ceremony took place on October 27, 2025, with many prominent figures in attendance. Following the extensive earthwork, the massive concrete and wood structure has been rising since February 2026. According to the construction companies in charge, the topping-out ceremony is scheduled to take place by the end of this year. The construction company is focusing on using as many sustainable and durable building materials as possible and on an architectural style that combines ecological responsibility with aesthetic appeal.
In the long term, the “Theater am Prater” is expected to create 400 new jobs and provide 1,800 seats. Furthermore, the construction is seen as a strong signal to establish the city as an international cultural and economic hub .

What awaits you on the new stage

If the workers on the construction site keep up this pace, the grand opening will take place in November 2027. Performances will strictly follow the “en suite” principle, which is standard practice in the international theater industry.
For you, this means a specific show will run daily as long as the venue is packed every night. The producers have clearly announced that the shows will definitely start in German. However, if the audience demands it strongly, original English versions could also end up on the schedule later. That’s going to be pretty awesome.
What many people don’t know about the mega-project

This massive building is swallowing up enormous costs. It costs an incredible 100 million euros, but is being funded entirely without city tax money. The architects have even thought of special, quiet retreat areas for people with sensory needs. The building is designed to blend in perfectly with its surroundings later on, without appearing like a disruptive foreign object.
Advance ticket sales for the premieres are also getting closer. They ’re set to officially launch as early as late 2026, so you’ll have to be quick to get your tickets. But we’ll keep you updated here and on social media, of course, so don’t panic! If you’re looking to unwind a bit after the long show, you’ll find plenty of cozy outdoor cafés just around the corner , the Prater of course, or the wonderful Vienna city center.
