If you want to enjoy world-class cuisine, you don’t have to go far. Vienna is not only known for its unique coffee culture, but also has some top-class restaurants to offer. The top cuisine of our musical metropolis is mentioned in the same breath as top cuisine from all over the world. And this has now been confirmed once again: Once again, the Steirereck has been included in the list of the “World’s 50 Best Restaurants”. We reveal why the Viennese restaurant is considered the best in the world.
What makes Steirereck so special?
Steirereck stands for creative, top Austrian cuisine, a sustainable philosophy, exceptional service and a unique ambience – this combination makes it one of the best restaurants in the world. Chef Heinz Reitbauer took over the restaurant from his parents almost 20 years ago and, together with his wife Birgit Reitbauer, has led it to international fame. The Viennese restaurant holds three Michelin stars and has won several international awards for its cuisine and service.
It has long been known that the Viennese restaurant is one of the best in the world. The Steirereck has been on the list of the “World’s 50 Best Restaurants” for 17 years without interruption. Last year it was ranked 22nd, now it is 33rd. The list’s jury sees the restaurant in the top 50 for certain reasons: “Although the ranking is undoubtedly due to the chef’s vision and skill, it also reflects Birgit Reitbauer’s outstanding and constantly evolving hospitality,” says the site, summarizing its criteria.
In addition to the special food, the interior also causes a stir. Like the cuisine, the restaurant’s interior combines the historic with the modern. The building dates back to 1904, but has been extensively renovated. Today, the interior is airy and furnished with a mixture of wood and concrete. In summer, the glass walls can be raised so that you can eat in the middle of Vienna’s green city park. The Steirereck is located on Heumarkt right in the heart of Vienna.
What’s on the menu at Steirereck?
Austria on your plate here! Chef Reitbauer uses many unknown ingredients for his creations, such as rare types of meat and fish or almost extinct vegetables. These are grown directly on the restaurant’s roof terrace or come from the family’s own farm in Styria. The restaurant also has its own beehives. The Steirereck attaches great importance to sustainability and creativity in all its ingredients – and you can taste it!
Dishes on the exquisite tasting menu (there is also an à la carte option) include pheasant with yacon, gooseberry and kale, young artichokes with bergamot, nettle and chicken velouté and kohlrabi with oats, apple and parsley. Steirereck is particularly famous for its bread trolley with around 25 varieties and an exceptional selection of cheeses. It’s worth trying out: Steirereck awaits you with top cuisine, hospitality and lots of enjoyment!
