From Milk Bar to Iconic Hangout
The culinary history of today’s pavilion began in 1951. At that time, the building was constructed bythe legendary Austrian architect Oswald Haerdtl and was initially operated during the day as a charming “Milchpavillon.” In the decades that followed, the venue became a fixture of Vienna’s cultural scene; it was expanded in the late 1950s and even attracted musical greats such as Ella Fitzgerald.
What makes the Volksgarten Pavillon so special is its successful blend of nostalgic design, nature, and urban lifestyle. The architecture exudes the unmistakable, slightly quirky charm of the 1950s and ’60s —complete with deep, green leather armchairs and striking pink-and-green lighting inside.
An idyllic outdoor dining area and legendary nights
The real star, however, is the spacious outdoor seating area. While the hustle and bustle of the Ringstrasse and Heldenplatz rages all around, here you can sit under shady, old trees on gravel paths as a small stream flows by. The culinary concept, which changes throughout the day, is also unique. The pavilion is open exclusively during the summer months (usually from April to September). During the day , it serves as a relaxed café and restaurant offering everything from classic Wiener schnitzel to modern pastrami sandwiches. In the evening, the space transforms. In addition to cool drinks , the original American barbecue smoker is fired up.
What’s more, the atmosphere regularly shifts to party mode. “Das Techno Café” enjoys absolute cult status; it has been taking place here every Tuesday evening since 1996 and has even attracted celebrity guests like Mick Jagger with its outdoor electronic beats.
