Although the grounds are located right in the heart of the city, inside you’ll find an oasis of absolute tranquility. We’re talking, of course, about the University of Vienna’s Botanical Garden.
Wild diversity and shady paths in summer
Rare plants bloom in the open air, while right next to them, an untouched fallow field is deliberately allowed to run wild. From June 7 to September 28, 2026, the new open-air exhibition will also showcase, on 17 large-format panels, just how much hidden life is actually teeming here.
This means that, in addition to mosses and insects, ecological relationships that are often overlooked in everyday life are also brought to light. Practical fact sheets are presented on this topic, so you can even learn how to promote biodiversity at home. A stroll through living history
Afterward, most visitors are drawn straight to the 300-square-meter bamboo grove, whose history dates back as far as 1893. As soon as the wind rustles through the dense stalks, you’ll instantly forget the hustle and bustle of everyday life in Vienna.
Because the garden was designed in the style of an English landscape garden, the entire grounds have a wonderfully organic feel. In addition, you can discover true botanical relics here, such as the historic Jacquin plane tree on Rennweg and the famous Jacquin ginkgo.
Expert insights on a weekend getaway
Whether you admire around 800 alpine plant species in the Alpinum or visit the cactus display is entirely up to you. If you want to satisfy your thirst for knowledge more thoroughly, you should take a closer look at the 60-minute weekend guided tours.
These take place every Friday and Saturday at 4:00 p.m. in German from early March through late October. Since no registration is required, you can decide to enjoy culture and nature on a whim.
Equally exciting are the rotating Wednesday tours at 4:30 p.m., during which scientists share the latest insights into their research. This makes the garden the perfect place to recharge on hot days while learning something new at the same time.
