The construction cranes in Donaustadt are in full swing for a forward-looking project. On October 5, 2026, the official groundbreaking ceremony took place for Vienna’s first WohnBAUM program. Under the evocative name “Hertha am Wasser,” a new neighborhood is taking shape at Steinspornweg 33 in the 22nd district, directly adjacent to the Danube floodplains.
The nonprofit housing developer MIGRA is building around 70 new, subsidized apartments here. The foundation of this project is a consistent, sustainable timber construction method.
Wood as a building material not only contributes to a better carbon footprint in the city but also promises a particularly pleasant and natural living environment within your own four walls.

The construction project on Steinspornweg isn’t the only one of its kind. The ceremonial groundbreaking served as a symbol for the entire so-called “Package B” of the city’s housing construction initiative.
This construction package includes projects starting simultaneously at Donaustadtstraße 120 and Leopoldauer Straße 132A over in neighboring Floridsdorf. This will expand housing in northeastern Vienna in a targeted and comprehensive manner.
Experience shows that there is enormous interest in affordable, nature-oriented housing in the capital. However, anyone hoping to move into these subsidized wood-frame apartments in the future doesn’t need to start packing their moving boxes just yet.
Final completion and the handover of keys for the Steinspornweg project are scheduled for the second quarter of 2028. Until then, you can watch the wooden facades slowly take shape during a walk along the waterfront.
