Anyone walking through the city right now might think summer has booked an extension. With temperatures reaching up to 25 degrees and plenty of sunshine, October is currently showing its warmest side. Although an initial cold front in western Austria is already bringing the first showers, the capital has so far been spared and is enjoying a moderate southeasterly wind. Nevertheless, meteorologists are now issuing a clear warning: a massive influx of cooler air is imminent.
According to current models from GeoSphere Austria, the end of the extremely hot days is already set. Ö3 meteorologist Sigi Fink also confirms that the persistent high-pressure phase will soon collapse completely. Exactly between October 8 and 10, 2026, the weather situation over eastern Austria will shift, while widespread rain reaches the country at the same time.
So be sure to make the most of the current T-shirt weather before the drastic change sets in. Although we still have a short window of time left, the clear forecasts leave no doubt that late summer is coming to an end.

Massive Impact on the East

Once this date arrives, the warm 25-degree mark will be a thing of the past. Instead, you’ll have to brace yourselves for thick clouds and autumnal rain, putting a major damper on what has been such a golden October so far.
Consequently, the approaching cold front will bring a significant drop in temperature. Furthermore, the days of wearing light jackets will be over for good, as the autumnal chill is here to stay.
Still, there’s no reason to panic, as long as your lined winter jacket is already hanging in the closet, ready to go. That means you still have just under six days to enjoy the warming rays of sunshine outdoors before gray autumn finally takes over.
