Tomorrow, Monday, the world’s best professional tennis players will begin the main draw at the Erste Bank Open in the Wiener Stadthalle. Anyone entering the historic Hall D today looks back on an arena that dates back to June 21, 1958, when it was inaugurated by architect Roland Rainer. At that time, tens of thousands of Viennese celebrated the building as Europe’s most modern multipurpose hall, whose bold roof structure continues to shape the city’s skyline to this day.
Where the Rolling Stones Once Ran Amok

A look back at the archives shows just how wild things can get in Vienna’s 15th district. On September 17, 1965, the Rolling Stones played their very first concert in Austria here. The ecstatic fans tore apart quite a few of the wooden Rainer chairs that day, making the performance go down in history as one of the wildest indoor concerts ever.
Up to 16,083 enthusiastic spectators can be accommodated here at major events to experience music and sports legends up close. With over 350 events annually and as the venue for the Eurovision Song Contest in May, the complex ranks among the busiest arenas in all of Europe.

52 Years of World-Class Tennis at Vogelweidplatz
When it comes to sports, the arena’s heart beats especially for the historic ATP tournament, which has called this place home since 1974. For the tournament running from October 24 to November 1, the arena floor is transformed into a prepared center court. Starting tomorrow, the top stars will serve their first balls on the blue Rebound Ace surface.
Those who want to watch the matches live on site can reach the venue in just a 3-minute walk from the Burggasse-Stadthalle subway station. Remaining tickets for the match days are available in advance starting at €19 per day ticket. The grand singles final will be held on Sunday, November 1.
