Turquoise blue water, crystal clear views, white sandy beaches… if these images remind you of dreamy vacation spots in Mexico or the Maldives, you are way off the mark. Because such stunning regions also exist in Europe. Especially around Vienna you can find beautiful seaside resorts and extraordinary nature hikes. But one lake stands out and is even called the “Caribbean of Austria”. What do we mean? None other than Lake Achensee in Tyrol.
Why is Lake Achensee called the “Caribbean of Austria”?

Lake Achensee owes its nickname “Austria’s Caribbean” above all to its bright turquoise, almost Caribbean-like water color and the extraordinary clarity of the lake. These beautiful colors are created by the tiny rock particles of the surrounding mountains, which reflect the sunlight and give the water its turquoise color. The picturesque backdrop is complemented by the white beaches and imposing cliffs of the mountains.
The lake was formed around 20,000 years ago by glacial movements during the Ice Age. The area was known early on for its stunning beauty: The first “tourists” visited the region as early as the late Middle Ages, and later princes and even Emperor Maximilian I settled there. The natural beauty of Lake Achensee was no longer a secret. Due to its size and maritime flair, it is often referred to as the “Tyrolean Sea”.
The legend of Lake Achensee

There are a number of mysterious stories surrounding Lake Achensee. According to one legend, there is a sunken village in the lake. According to this, wealthy citizens once lived there. When a poor old man visited the village one day and asked for food and shelter, the inhabitants mocked him and chased him away.
The man did not take this lying down: He climbed a surrounding mountain and cursed the village for its cold-heartedness. As a result, tons of rain poured down and the huge masses of water submerged the village, which disappeared forever.
How much of this legend is true remains part of the myth. However, visitors to the lake report that on clear days, the top of the former church tower shimmers through the surface of the water.
What activities can I experience at Lake Achensee?

The “Caribbean of Austria” is a paradise all year round. Whether you’re looking for relaxation or an active vacation, there’s something for everyone here. You can sunbathe on the white sandy beaches and swim, snorkel or even dive in the crystal-clear water. Sailing clubs, boat trips, windsurfing schools and stand-up paddling rentals provide even more sporting experiences.
Around the lake, there are hiking and cycling tours along the mountains. The spectacular view of the lake rewards the more challenging tours through the mountains. Those who prefer a more leisurely pace can stroll along the lakeside promenade.
There is also an adventure park by the lake with a high ropes course, via ferrata and climbing gardens. Golf fans will find two golf courses in the immediate vicinity of the lake. Another popular tradition is the New Year’s Eve swim in Lake Achensee – it certainly never gets boring in the “Caribbean of Austria”.
