On a Sunday afternoon, there’s probably nothing better than homemade Bienenstich, carrot cake, or a slice of world-famous Sachertorte, accompanied by a hot coffee with a shot of espresso. At the Vienna Generations Café Vollpension, you’ll find all these delicacies, baked by genuine grandmas and grandpas.
This café began its success story back in 2012, when the well-known social entrepreneurs Mike Lanner and Moriz Piffl were searching for a moist slice of cake that could hold a candle to their grandmothers’ baking. But despite the vast selection in the city of Vienna, the two couldn’t find what they were looking for, and so the idea for Café Vollpension was born.

Café Vollpension: Fighting Poverty in Old Age
Café Vollpension is much more than an ordinary Viennese coffeehouse—it’s an award-winning social project that brings generations together. In the cozy bakery, you won’t find trained pastry chefs, but real grandmas and grandpas. Using old family recipes, they bake Buchteln, Sachertorte, and apple strudel that taste just like childhood. Rarely has a visit to a café felt so much like coming home.
Behind the charming vintage ambiance lies a deeper purpose: The café actively combats poverty and loneliness among the elderly. Through their work, the seniors supplement their pensions and find an important social role. Amidst collectible mugs and wingback chairs, a lively place of exchange between young and old emerges, where the craft of grandmothers is celebrated.
From the baking academy to the online shop
In addition to its cozy coffeehouse atmosphere, Vollpension offers a wide range of activities designed to pass on the valuable knowledge of seniors. At the in-house baking academy, interested participants can learn from the pros in both in-person and digital workshops. Whether live on-site or via online stream —the grandmas and grandpas demonstrate step by step how to make the perfect strudel dough or the fluffiest Buchteln.
If you’d like to give the gift of that “grandma vibe,” you’ll find lovingly designed baking books, merchandise, and gift certificates in the online shop. You can even book their unique catering or mobile baking stations for corporate events or private parties.
