If you want to get your hands on some really good Italian street food, there will be a new place to go in the city this spring. Forno Focaccia is moving and bringing its crispy creations to the heart of Viennese life: the 1st district. Silvia and Otmane are starting a new chapter with their concept and serving up concentrated Italian expertise. So you no longer have to resort to your favorite cafés or restaurants and can try something new.
The brains behind the dough
Behind the counter and at the oven are Silvia and Otmane, two young Italians who understand their craft from the ground up. Silvia originally came to Vienna to study patisserie. Between delicate tartlets and creams, she discovered her true passion for the traditional art of focaccia. Otmane followed her and has since been the creative mind behind the concept and design of the Focacerria. He is, so to speak, the reason why you feela little bit like you’re in Italy when you walk through the door. Their shared vision culminated in a wonderful combination that promptly earned top ratings in the Falstaff Street Food Guide.
New home on Wollzeile
From March 2, the first location at Neustiftgasse 81 in the 7th district will be closed. Butyou won’t have to go without your carbohydrates for long, because at the same time in March, the new pop-up at Wollzeile 29 will open . Right in the center, the two will then serve you their specialties again. The location is ideal for taking a break after a stroll through the city. Be prepared for the place to fill up quickly at lunchtime.
What’s on the menu at Forno
The focus is clearly on the airy pizza in teglia and the juicy stuffed focaccia. The dough is given plenty of time to rest, which ultimately results in a really delicious crust. To give you two specific examples from the menu: if you’re really hungry, go for the stuffed focaccia La Gustosa for $12.90. Here, Mortadella DOP, creamy stracciatella cheese, and pistachio pesto are sandwiched between the fluffy dough halves.
For a quick bite, we recommend a slice of pizza in teglia – the Salsiccia e Friarielli variety with sausage, potatoes, and smoked Provola cheese costs €5.50. But after all those carbohydrates, be sure to save room for something sweet. In addition to hearty street food, there are Italian desserts that showcase Silvia’s patisserie expertise. Her tiramisù al pistacchio (€8.50) is the perfect accompaniment to espresso. Order a proper aperitivo to go with it, and your afternoon slump will be a thing of the past.
When to get the freshest pieces
As the restaurant on Wollzeile is quickly becoming a hotspot for lunch breaks, it’s best to stop by around 11:30 a.m. That way, you can grab your focaccia straight from the oven before the line gets too long. Pack it all in a bag and enjoy your meal in the nearby city park as the first rays of spring sunshine appear.
