In 1999, just under 30 people skated through the city together on inline skates and bicycles for the first time . Now , from May through September, between 1,500 and 3,000 sports enthusiasts gather weekly on the paved streets.
Participants take over wide lanes that are otherwise used by motorized commuter traffic. With the gentle sound of wheels rolling instead of engine noise, they move at a steady pace along Vienna’s Ring Road and through neighboring districts.
Each ride is between 15 and 25 kilometers long. The group usually takes 2 to 4 hours to complete a tour, as the pace is adjusted to suit the entire group. While roller skates are the classic choice, bicycles are just as welcome. The main thing is that the ride is powered entirely by muscle power, so no exhaust fumes are produced.

Incidentally, this rolling event is organized by the Vienna Green Party. While the routes change every week, the route on Friday, July 24, 2026, for example, heads toward the Gasometer, starting at Heldenplatz. Finally, in September there’s even a ride along the otherwise closed A22 highway. Heldenplatz serves as the starting point every week.

Safety and Weather Check for the Tour
Since the column stretches for meters, the police and trained Rolling Guards ensure a safe route. That’s why it’s important for all skaters to follow the team’s instructions. This maintains a safe distance within the group and guarantees everyone’s safety.
However, the group skates exclusively on dry surfaces, which is why the event is canceled in case of rain. For this reason, the organizing team posts a current weather update on social media every Friday starting around 6:00 p.m. Provided the streets are dry, the tour starts promptly at 9:00 p.m.
