If you’re interested in botany, you don’t necessarily have to make the pilgrimage to Schönbrunn. Instead, you should take a trip to these adventure gardens. About a 50-minute drive from Vienna, nestled among the vineyards near Langenlois, lies a very special 60,000-square-meter area. There are plenty of events, sights, attractions, and lots of time to spend in nature here for all ages !
There, you don’t just stroll across a large meadow. The grounds are divided into 50 strictly separate themed gardens, ranging from classic English rose gardens to Asian landscape architecture featuring a four-meter-tall Buddha. Especially now in spring, the garden is particularly colorful!
We’re talking about the Kittenberger Erlebnisgärten in Schiltern. Especially at the start of the season in spring, around 100,000 snow roses, crocuses, and tulips bloom here all at once.
A record-breaking structure and animal companions

A solid record is also hidden on the grounds: the world’s largest herb spiral stands here. With a diameter of 40 meters and a height of nine meters, over 3,000 individual plants from 400 varieties grow here.
You can wind your way up a 400-meter-long network of paths and learn from the information boards which herb helps with which ailments. A clever architectural detail: the two main paths never intersect along the entire spiral. Perfect for getting a little lost and just letting yourself drift.

In addition to the flora, there’s also quite an active fauna. In the so-called “animal farm garden,” you’ll encounter alpacas, llamas, ponies, and dwarf goats. Every day at 11:30 a.m., the “Goat Whispering” session takes place, where you can get to know the animals better together with the caretakers.
Action in the Waldviertel and regional cuisine

If you’re looking for some action after a relaxing stroll, head to the Adventure Garden. There you’ll find not only classic slides but also the longest wooden ball track in the Waldviertel, stretching nearly 200 meters.
Fresh air makes you hungry, which is why the on-site Genuss-Glashaus offers hot meals, cakes, and even breakfast. The ingredients—from crisp lettuce to aromatic tomatoes—come directly from the garden’s own beds.
If you like, grab a coffee, a cold Zwettler beer, or some homemade juice and sit right on the sun terrace next to the waterfall. For a stress-free tour of all the areas, you should plan on spending at least two hours.
