When people think of Vienna’s 10th district, idyllic landscapes rarely come to mind. On the southeastern slope of the Laaer Berg, however, lies a vast area spanning approximately 608,600 square meters. This used to be a dusty brick-making site before the city transformed it into a green oasis for those seeking relaxation. In short: This is a destination that’s extremely versatile by Viennese standards. While many people are only familiar with the spa, the adjacent green space is completely underrated. The complex originated from the 1974 Vienna International Garden Show and is known as Kurpark Oberlaa.
Alpacas and Japanese-style pond landscapes
That’s why you should keep your eyes open while strolling, because unusual animals live here. In the 4,400-square-meter animal enclosure, alpacas, dwarf goats, and Carinthian spectacled sheep graze peacefully outdoors. In addition, a picturesque Takasaki garden with traditional stone lanterns is hidden in the middle of the park.
However, you should know in advance that this Asian-themed area is only open on Wednesdays and Saturdays. For example, you can relax by the water lily pond there, even though the big city surrounds it. Nevertheless, the entire area is constantly evolving and undergoing modernization.
Because Vienna is actively focusing on de-sealing, a large concrete parking lot was completely dismantled. In its place, there is now a 420-square-meter natural meadow that serves as a valuable nesting site for insects. In addition, a modern calisthenics facility has been built for your outdoor fitness.
