Watching movies as the sun sinks behind the Viennese skyline is as much a part of summer as a good ice cream. Anyone looking for big-screen cinema at lofty heights will make their way to one of the most spectacular rooftop terraces on the Gürtel starting in June. More specifically, it’s the Main Library on Urban-Loritz-Platz, which will once again serve as the venue for a very special open-air cinema this year. The name says it all, because the event series is called Kino Am Dach!
A summer full of illusions and thrills
From June 1 to September 12, 2026, cinematic highlights will be shown here daily. Although the cultural event is already entering its 23rd season, this year’s program promises to be particularly gripping.
Under the motto “Mind Games,” everything revolves around the question of what is real and what ultimately remains merely an optical illusion. You can look forward to classics like “The Truman Show” or psychological thrillers like “Black Swan” and “American Psycho.”
Because the start of the film is flexibly scheduled according to the actual sunset, admission times shift monthly. In June, for example, the screening starts at 9:15 p.m., while the box office opens as early as 7:30 p.m. in September. Additionally, a regular ticket costs a fair 12 euros, while students and seniors pay only 11 euros.
Snacks, four-legged friends, and Viennese weather
If you get hungry before the movie, the box office will provide you with fresh popcorn and snacks, while the bar at the “Oben” restaurant serves cold drinks. You’re also allowed to bring your own drinks instead of having to buy them on-site.
But be sure to pack a warm jacket, because it can get really chilly on the roof in the evenings. Finally, some good news for dog owners: your four-legged friends are more than welcome.
In any case, you should reserve your tickets online in advance, as they’ll be held until half an hour before the show starts. That way, you’re playing it safe, although there’s also a limited number of tickets available at the box office. If a screening has to be cut short due to a severe summer thunderstorm, your ticket will instead serve as a voucher for another day during the season.
