If you want to see good movies in Vienna this summer, you don’t have to spend a dime. A time-honored cultural project is once again bringing authentic cinema flair directly to Vienna’s neighborhoods this year. And it’s completely free of charge. What began in 1990 on a small square will celebrate its 35th anniversary in 2026 as the city’s oldest mobile open-air cinema. We’re talking about the legendary VOLXkino, which will be touring all across Vienna from June 10 to September 19, 2026.
Cinema right on your doorstep
The concept is as simple as it is ingenious: instead of luring people into expensive movie theaters, the screen simply comes to the people. A total of 52 film screenings are on the program this season, spread across a wide variety of locations. You can look forward to screenings in tranquil parks, bustling marketplaces, or right in the middle of Vienna’s municipal housing estates.
The kickoff takes place on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, in Leopoldstadt. Starting at 9:00 p.m., the Karmelitermarkt will host the opening screening of the film Sirât. In the following weeks, the event will move on to well-known locations such as Meidlinger Platzl or Jodok-Fink-Platz in the 8th district.

The program and the hard facts
The film selection is pleasantly unconventional, ranging from international gems to true pop culture classics. On June 26, for example, the comedy Clueless will screen in Sigmund Freud Park, followed by the science fiction film In Time the next day. Sophisticated documentaries and arthouse highlights also find their place on the mobile screen.
Since the screenings take place outdoors, the start time is determined by natural twilight. In June and July, the films start at 9:00 p.m.; in August, the start time moves up to 8:30 p.m. or 8:00 p.m.; and in September, the show begins as early as 7:30 p.m. Just pack a blanket or your own seating, grab a cold drink, and enjoy the balmy summer evenings in your neighborhood.
