If you look south from Vienna, you’ll find yourself in no time in a landscape that feels like much more than just a suburban belt. The Mödling castle ruins sit enthroned up there on their rock and look exactly like what you’d imagine a proper ruin to look like.
Once upon a time, this was no small outpost, but one of the largest castle complexes in Austria. In the 12th century, a branch of the Babenberg family resided here. Even the famous minstrel Walther von der Vogelweide is said to have come and gone here, singing his songs.
Today, only the foundation walls and a few imposing arches remain, but that’s exactly what gives it its vibe. It’s quiet, steeped in history, and you immediately feel a bit transported back in time as you stroll among the ancient stones.
The perfect route through the nature park

The best part of the ruins is the journey there. It’s best to start right in Mödling at the Prießnitztal parking lot. From there, a lovely hiking trail leads through the Föhrenberge Nature Park.
The climb takes about 30 to 45 minutes, depending on your fitness level. It’s not a grueling mountain hike, but rather a leisurely stroll that you can easily manage even after a late breakfast. The paths are lined with the typical black pines, which smell so wonderful in the wind.

Once you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with a panoramic view that, on a clear day, stretches all the way to the Leitha Mountains. The ruins are freely accessible, so you don’t have to pay an entrance fee and can explore at your own pace without any time pressure.
What many people don’t know

An interesting fact for all history buffs: The castle was almost completely destroyed in 1529 during the first Turkish siege and was never properly rebuilt afterward. What we see today consists partly of romantic reconstructions from the 19th century. Back then, people simply wanted to recapture that “knightly spirit.”
Our tip for the perfect ending: Once you’ve made your way down, you should definitely pop over to Mödling’s old town. The pedestrian zone is packed with small cafés and charming shops. A glass of wine in one of the outdoor dining areas is practically a must after the hike to round off the day perfectly.
