An original tournament courtyard, majestic birds of prey soaring just above your head , and massive Renaissance walls that have served as the backdrop for international films. If you ’re looking to get out of the city for the weekend and soak up some historic vibes, you should definitely put the Kamptal on your radar.
Renaissance gem and film set

Rosenburg Castle sits enthroned on a steep cliff high above the Kamp River. What began as a small fortress around 1150 was converted into a sprawling Renaissance complex in the 16th century. The estate has belonged to the Hoyos-Sprinzenstein family since 1681.
The architecture is so stunning and well-preserved that film crews regularly come here. For example, in 2013 the castle served as a backdrop for the fairy tale film The White Snake and for the French production Angélique. No wonder—the gigantic tournament courtyard, lined with arcades, is one of the very few in Austria that still exists entirely in its original condition.
The Waldviertel Easter Market 2026

Just in time for spring, the castle kicks off the season with a real highlight. On the weekend of March 28–29, 2026 (from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.), the Waldviertel Easter Market will take place here .
The state rooms and sprawling gardens are then packed with regional crafts. From bobbin lace to handmade ceramics, you’re sure to find something to take home. To recharge , there are plenty of food stalls in the castle courtyard serving hearty Waldviertel delicacies.
For the kids , the Easter Bunny hops around the grounds at 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. , handing out surprises. Admission to the market costs €8.00 for adults and €4.00 for children between the ages of 6 and 15.
On both Easter Market Sundays (March 22 and 29, 2026), a free sightseeing train runs between the train station and the castle. This way, you can skip the steep walk up the hill and start your trip completely stress-free.
Falcons in a nosedive & armories

The absolute hallmark of Rosenburg is its historic falconry. During the Easter Market, there are special demonstrations at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. (additional fee: 9.00 euros). When eagles and falcons take off right in front of your eyes and circle over the river valley, it’s quite a spectacle.
Want to delve deeper into history? Then join one of the castle tours (daily at 9:45 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 1:45 p.m., and 4:00 p.m., for an additional 7.00 euros). You’ll stroll through the historic weapon collections, old state rooms, and the rose garden.
