It’s no longer news that Vienna can make music. Top concerts by world stars regularly take place in the capital, as do romantic classical music experiences by candlelight. It is not for nothing that Vienna is nicknamed the “music metropolis”. Another festival has now been added to this broad spectrum: The International Summer Academy of the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (mdw) is bringing a new music festival to Vienna for the first time. From July 21 to August 3, you can enjoy the best concerts by young talents from all over the world for two weeks.
International stage for young talents: The “Music City Lab” is coming to Vienna
Vienna will be a meeting place for the talents of tomorrow: more than 200 young musicians from over 40 countries are coming to Vienna for the mdw’s International Summer Academy. There they will receive lessons and take part in workshops with renowned musicians and international artists. Under the motto “Music City Lab”, the young talents will explore what makes Vienna a city of music – from classical Viennese music to today’s music scene.
But even those who do not actively participate in the academy can benefit from the musicians’ skills. After all, the stay doesn’t just answer theoretical questions. There is also plenty of practical experience for our benefit: the new music festival brings over 30 public concerts to the city. From solo performances to chamber music evenings and open-air shows, you can discover the latest treasures of the next generation every day.
Discover fresh music: this is the program of the summer festival

The Summer Academy takes place on the modernized mdw campus on Anton-von-Webern-Platz (3rd district). Many concerts take place there, but also at other music venues in Vienna, such as the Beethovenmusuem or Museumsplatz. Highlights include an open-air concert on Museumsplatz (Friday, July 25, from 7:30 pm), the “Cool Classics Open Air” on Schrödingerplatz (July 31) and the final concert “Highlights of isa25” in the concert hall of the mdw. The small and large concert evenings transform the Austrian capital into a center for music from all over the world.
And best of all: many concerts and events are free of charge or accessible at moderate prices. You can find the entire program and tickets here. The new music festival thus offers a unique opportunity for Viennese to experience top-class young talent from all over the world live and to participate in a creative exchange in the city of music.
