Normally, a cable car is just for getting to the summit quickly. But exactly one hour south of Vienna, the ride itself becomes the culinary main course. You step into the cabin in the morning and are immediately served a picnic box brimming with goodies.
To prevent the coffee from spilling on the way up, the cable car’s speed is deliberately slowed down. This allows you to glide up the slope for about 30 minutes in complete relaxation, taking in the peaceful view of nature below.
Regional snack high above the treetops
Your basket is filled exclusively with regional delicacies from local producers. The selection ranges from crispy rolls and muesli to fresh vegetables and cheese, as well as sweet snacks for later.

When you register, simply indicate whether you’d like your snack to include meat, be vegetarian, or be completely vegan. Drinks are also included in the price of 45 euros per person.
Advance reservations are absolutely required
The whole experience starts right at the valley station of the Erlebnisalm Mönichkirchen. However, a spontaneous visit on the weekend won’t work, as you must book in advance. Without a reservation, the few converted gondolas will be completely booked up, and you’ll have to set off on your hike hungry.
The season for this relaxing mountain breakfast runs from May to September. After the half-hour ascent, you’ll arrive at the mountain station well-fortified and can head straight onto the hiking trails. So if you’d like to swap the crowded café in town for fresh mountain air and local ingredients, be sure to book a time slot soon.
