The Schanigarten, which originated in Vienna, is a special form of outdoor restaurant garden. Schanigärten can now be found all over Austria. How do they differ from a pub garden and which ones are worth a visit?
What is a pub garden?

A Schanigarten is a pub garden on public land, for example on sidewalks or at the side of the road. They are not located on the actual property of the pub, which is why they are subject to approval and fees.
The term comes from the former nickname for the youngest waiter, the so-called “Jean” or “Schani”. He was usually responsible for setting up the furniture in the outdoor area. This is where the term “Schanigarten” comes from.
The first Schanigarten in Vienna dates back to 1750 and today there are an estimated 3,500 Schanigärten in Vienna alone. We present a small selection here.
