Less than a 60-minute drive from Vienna’s city limits, a massive steel structure juts out directly over the cliff. As soon as you step onto the grating platform, you’ll feel the wind beneath your feet, as the structure extends a good eight meters into the air beyond the edge. Set aside a day in late summer and hike for about an hour toward the sky before climbing up to the platform with its breathtaking view.
Structure Directly Above the Abyss
The so-called Skywalk in the Hohe Wand Nature Park is not for the faint of heart. Since the terrace is located at an altitude of nearly 900 meters above sea level, you’ll be looking straight down 120 meters into the depths. If the weather cooperates, the view extends all the way to Lake Neusiedl and far into the flat Vienna Basin.
The heavy-duty steel structure has been anchored extremely securely directly into the limestone cliffs of the Hohe Wand. Although the structure sways slightly in strong winds, that’s simply part of the thrill you’re looking for at such dizzying heights. Plus, the platform’s slight incline offers the perfect angle for capturing impressive landscape shots of the natural surroundings.

Getting There and a Cozy Stop
If you don’t want to climb the entire mountain, you can easily reach the area via the toll road. Then park your car right at the Almfrieden Inn and reach your destination after a short 10-minutewalk. However, if you prefer a more active route, take the steep ascent via the Völlerin-Steig trail.
Because the entire Hohe Wand Nature Park is open year-round, this location is also ideal for excursions in deep snow or to catch a breathtaking sunset.
