Since you absolutely loved our article on the tulip bloom in March, here comes the next season on site. The strawberries are here! Fresh fruit is currently drawing visitors to the Vienna countryside, as the main harvest season in the Wein- and Waldviertel regions has finally officially begun. Those willing to take a short drive will find an idyllic, regional berry paradise for the whole family. The exact name of this destination is Erdbeer- & Kürbishof Wunderlich in the well-known Ahragartensiedlung in Zissersdorf.
The farm’s history actually began back in 1986, when an enthusiastic 17-year-old traded his beloved moped for 500 strawberry plants. Today, the next generation runs the sustainable family business with tremendous passion and agricultural expertise.
Breakfast amidst strawberry fields

Since the various fields are located at different altitudes, however, fresh produce is available continuously from May through October. So you can snack on ripe, sweet fruit straight from the plant for nearly half the year. In addition, the associated strawberry house in Stockerau offers produce delivered fresh up to five times a day directly from the nearby fields.
If you visit on a sunny weekend, you can even enjoy a hearty breakfast in the lovingly decorated courtyard. Be sure to try the unique, aromatic strawberry coffee or the freshly baked, homemade, traditional pastries.

Pick your own or take them home conveniently
Those who prefer to get their hands dirty can take advantage of the expansive pick-your-own fields in Mörtersdorf, Obergrünbach, or right next to Zwettl Abbey. There, you pay exactly €4.90 per kilo for your self-harvested bounty, up to a total of 10 kg. Finally, handy baskets are available right at the edge of the field for your personal picking experience.
Alternatively, there are the distinctive red sales booths, or “strawberry huts,” such as those in Horn or Gmünd. This means you don’t necessarily have to head out to the field yourself; instead, you can take freshly picked berries home right away, provided you stop by during regular business hours. While fresh fruit dominates the selection, connoisseurs can also look forward to liquid specialties like strawberry frizzante.
In short, this little outing is well worth it for anyone who appreciates genuine regional quality and honest craftsmanship. After all, the owners have always been strict about using resources sparingly. Finally, be sure to take a jar of homemade jam home with you as a sweet souvenir.
