Just about a 1.5-hour drive from Vienna lies an impressive natural and cultural gem. The imposing fortress dramatically perches on a densely forested headland, surrounded by the deep-blue waters of the Dobra Reservoir. Experience history up close and explore the ruins
The castle complex’s roots stretch far back into the Middle Ages. The structure was first mentioned in a document in 1186 in connection with Hertnit von Dobra. The name comes from the Slavic language and means “forest” —a fitting reference to the region’s original natural landscape. Over the centuries, the fortress changed hands several times, fell into disrepair beginning in the 18th century, and was finally extensively restored a few decades ago.
Today, Dobra is one of the most atmospheric castle complexes in the region. The absolute highlight is the keep, which visitors can climb. From the top, there’s a fabulous panoramic view over the winding arms of the reservoir. As you explore the old battlements, vaults, and courtyards, you can feel the history of past centuries up close.
Active vacation by the water: Hiking, paddling, and swimming
Once you’ve explored the historic walls, you’ll find plenty of recreational opportunities around the ruins. The clear, refreshing moor water of the reservoir invites you to take a long swim in the summer. Right near the fortress, natural sunbathing areas and the lakeside campsite offer ideal spots to take a dip in the cool water.
Those who prefer a more active experience can rent a stand-up paddleboard (SUP) or a pedal boat on site to majestically circle the castle from the water. In addition, idyllic forest trails along the steep banks lead to ever-changing viewpoints.
