Just under a 50-minute drive from Vienna, an imposing castle complex offers a well-conceived museum concept covering 40,000 years of human history. Across approximately 1,100 m² of exhibition space, scientific findings meet vivid reconstructions at the MAMUZ Museum. The museum features various exhibitions, offers workshops on traditional crafts—where you can dye your own fabric or forge a knife—and gives you a glimpse into life from a long-forgotten era. Interactive Journey Through Time at the Castle
Essentially, the visit is divided into two main sections, as you can explore both the historic building and the expansive outdoor grounds with historic dwellings. Inside, the exhibition “From Prehistory to the Middle Ages” takes you through the development of Central Europe across three floors. The newly designed ARCHÄO BASIS features digital games and animated films on experimental archaeology, making complex topics easy to understand.
You’ll also see original artifacts from Lower Austria’s cultural history, drawn from a collection of 3 million objects. As you make your way through the rooms, you’ll learn how researchers work and what methods they use today. The tour remains entertaining throughout, as many interactive stations invite you to try things out for yourself. After building a miniature longhouse, you’ll finally have a much better understanding of the old techniques.

An archaeological site like a time portal
As soon as you leave the castle building, you enter a different world set in the great outdoors. The outdoor grounds feature faithful replicas of residential buildings based on actual archaeological findings. There you’ll also discover a Neolithic longhouse made of clay and wood, as well as a fully functional bronze foundry for traditional crafts.
Although everything looks as if it’s been there forever, the huts were built according to scientific criteria from the Iron Age. You’ll even see historic grain varieties like emmer and spelt in the fields, which illustrate everyday life. During the historical festivals in the summer, Celts set up camp, which really brings the area to life.
In addition , the extended special exhibition “The Language of the Goddesses” will run until the end of the season on November 29, 2026 . In short: For just €13 admission for adults, you’ll get a mix of rare exhibits, modern science, and an open-air experience.
