Have you ever wondered how nomads lived or what actually happens during a blackout? An interactive destination in the Waldviertel answers exactly these questions—without a single dusty display case. So pack up the family, because here you ’ll hike right through 12 different time zones.
We’re talking about Sonnenwelt in Großschönau, which has been dedicated to the theme of “People & Energy” since 2013. This isn’t about dry theory, but about actively exploring everything from antiquity to the future. Since the BIO.ENERGIE.MESSE will be taking place on the grounds from June 4 through June 7, 2026, there will also be additional guided tours at 10:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Climate, Blackout & 12 Time Zones
However, a visit is worthwhile all year round, because the current special exhibition “The Powerchangers” finally makes renewable electricity tangible. Around 200,000 visitors have already toured the center since it opened. While the grown-ups learn inside, a spacious energy-themed playground awaits the little ones outside.
Free maze and hearty snack
Here, kids can test their dexterity on an Archimedes spiral or explore the first stone labyrinth in the Waldviertel region. The fact that this huge outdoor area is completely free to access also saves you some money for a snack afterward.
Afterward, though, your stomach will likely be growling, which is why the on-site Solar Café is a great place to go. Here, for example, you can get a hearty lumberjack sandwich for 8.50 euros or a hearty goulash soup with a roll for 6.50 euros, if you’re in the mood for something warm.
Although many attractions are expensive, adult admission here is a reasonable 14 euros. However, admission is completely free with the NÖ-Card, while children under six don’t pay anything at all. Still, keep an eye on the clock and plan ahead: Last admission is promptly at 3 p.m.
