Vienna’s drinking water enjoys a worldwide reputation and flows from the Alps into the city entirely without a single pump. Since 1998, you’ve been able to hike this special water trail in the Vienna countryside yourself, as a two-part trail was established back then to mark the 125th anniversary of the first high-altitude water pipeline. You’ll hike directly above the underground pipeline route while enjoying magnificent natural landscapes.
From alpine trails through the Höllental
The first stage starts in Kaiserbrunn and takes you 19 kilometers to Gloggnitz. Be sure to pack sturdy hiking boots, as one section is marked as a challenging alpine trail. After passing the historic water pipeline museum, the hike continues for about 5 hours through the Höllental valley along the Schwarza River.

Through the idyllic Thermenlinie vineyards
If you prefer a more leisurely pace, simply choose the second stage from Bad Vöslau to Mödling. This route is 18 kilometers long and takes you through idyllic vineyards and rolling deciduous forests; you should plan on about 4 hours of walking time. A real highlight is the historic aqueduct in Baden, which, at 700 meters long, is one of the most impressive structures along the route.
Finally, just before Gumpoldskirchen, you can even refresh yourself with fresh spring water at the original waterworks building. The tour is also easy to plan using public transportation, as all train stations are conveniently accessible from Vienna. However, neither section is suitable for strollers, so it’s advisable to bring complete hiking gear.
Furthermore, the entire system is fascinating from a historical perspective, as the pipeline was opened as early as 1873 to contain devastating epidemics. Since 2001, the federal capital has even protected this precious resource by enshrining its own Vienna Water Charter in the constitution. Thus, you’ll be hiking along historic trails while the liquid gold flows inexorably downhill beneath you.
