When the temperature rises in the city, most Viennese are drawn to the usual hotspots. Although the Danube Island offers plenty of space, you’ll rarely find true peace and quiet there. That’s why it’s worth checking out the eastern outskirts of the city, where an unspoiled natural paradise in the form of a natural swimming spot on the Lobau lies hidden. There, you can cool off in the shallow, crystal-clear water away from the crowds and experience true wilderness.
The quick route to a green paradise
First, drive east on the busy Raffineriestraße — though cyclists can reach their destination just as easily. You can park right near the “Zur Kurv’n” snack bar . As soon as you see the street sign, turn onto the marked path leading to the Panozzalacke.
After just a few meters, signs will point you toward the roughly 5-kilometer-long loop trail. You’ll walk straight toward the water, while the dense canopy of leaves provides pleasant shade. On your right , you’ll come across a large meadow with cozy picnic benches.
Turn left through the thicket so that you end up right at the first, beautiful natural swimming spot. Here, the water is wonderfully shallow and surrounded by trees, making it the perfect place to relax. With a little luck, you can also spot crayfish and iridescent dragonflies here.

If you continue walking a bit further, you’ll reach the “Knusperhäuschen” snack stand . From there, the main trail leads to other hidden swimming spots that offer complete tranquility . Since we’re in a protected national park, be sure to stay on the official trails and respect nature.
Swimming is also permitted exclusively at the designated natural swimming areas. Dogs must be kept on a leash at all times on the trails, so everyone should adhere to this rule. However, there is one exception: when swimming in the Danube or its tributaries, your four-legged friend may be off the leash.
