The production of soy products is a 2,000-year-old Chinese craft that, in our part of the world, usually ends up in our shopping carts only in industrially packaged form. A minimalist-designed workshop at Vienna’s Karmelitermarkt called Wienertofu proves that freshly produced goods are in a completely different league when it comes to taste. Here you’ll find a concept that, with its white tiles and plenty of chrome, looks more like a clean editorial design than a classic marketplace. It’s also Vienna’s first tofu factory. We think it’s an exciting concept that you absolutely have to try. Especially because the tofu here is completely different from what you’re used to.
Transparent production and regional organic beans

In this open-kitchen workshop, there are no secrets in the back room. The owners, Lisa and Liwei, along with their staff, produce their fresh tofu right in front of market visitors, blending Asian expertise with organic soybeans from Lower Austria. This transparency while watching definitely whets your appetite for the final product, which is also processed on-site. You’ve definitely never eaten tofu prepared like this before!

From spicy Mapo to tofu cheesecake

The Wienertofu factory itself, located at Stand 65 at the Karmelitermarkt, opens its kitchen Monday through Saturday starting at 11 a.m. The menu features hearty dishes like warming silken tofu soups for €5.50 or crispy tofu pieces, served with either coconut curry or spicy mala sauce. Those who prefer something heartier can order the Mapo Tofu with rice starting at 12.50 euros, which is available in both vegan and meat-based versions.
If you still have room after the main course, treat yourself to a chocolate-tofu mousse or the tofu cheesecake, each for 5.00 euros. And the expansion continues: At the new market space at the Naschmarkt, the focus is now also on tasting and socializing. Cooking workshops and “How to Tofu” courses are also planned there for the future, to actively pass on this traditional craft to you.
