Vienna has a new hangout for fans of Japanese pop culture: The Akihabara Cafe has opened its doors, bringing the flair of Tokyo’s famous electronics and manga district to the Austrian capital. Even on opening day, a long line formed outside the café, and many guests arrived in homemade cosplay costumes.
A Little Piece of Tokyo in Vienna

The café opened its doors just recently and combines a quiet reading atmosphere with specialties from the Far East. Visitors to the café pay exactly 8 euros for one hour of manga reading, including a drink. This creates a relaxed environment where guests can browse through countless meters of bookshelves without any rush.
Just like the book selection, the drink menu impresses with typical Japanese classics. A freshly prepared matcha costs 5.20 euros, while traditional mochi and refreshing bubble tea round out the menu. Those who want to wind down the evening a bit more quietly can opt for rice wine instead: a bottle of sake is available starting at 13.50 euros.
Cuisine with Character at Vienna’s First Manga Café

The café thus caters to a growing community in Vienna that is passionate about Japanese pop culture and cuisine. Thanks to its central location near the university, the café is ideal for both a quick break between lectures and a longer afternoon spent reading. With daily hours from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., visitors can still find a seat in the cozy dining area even late in the evening.
With the Akihabara Cafe, Vienna’s culinary scene gains a bold and lovingly designed addition. Whether as a destination for anime fans, a meeting place for students, or a discovery for the curious: the café shows just how vibrant Japanese pop culture has become in Austria. It’s well worth a visit, not least because of the warm atmosphere. If you’re in the mood for a taste of Japan without hopping on a plane, this is the perfect spot.
