A narrow rocky outcrop that drops nearly 300 meters almost vertically toward the Danube is home to one of Austria’s most fascinating fortifications. Anyone who walks through the wooden bridges and thick walls today immediately senses why this fortress was considered impregnable in the Middle Ages. The origins of the Aggstein castle ruins date back to the early 12th century, when the notorious noble family of the Kuenringers established their stronghold here.
However, the place did not become famous and feared until the 15th century, because the robber baron Jörg Scheck von Wald locked his prisoners on a tiny, unsecured rock ledge so that they had no choice but to starve to death or take a leap to their salvation—into the abyss. He called this cruel little spot “Rosengärtlein.”

Today, the approximately 150-meter-long Spornburg stands as a perfectly secured ruin that you can explore at your own pace. Via wooden walkways and stairs, you can reach the highest viewing platforms, which offer a sweeping view of the Danube Valley.
Puzzle fun and historical tours

You should plan on spending at least two to three hours here, as the complex houses not only the classic walls but also a modern museum. If you want to delve deeper into the subject, pick up an audio guide at the ticket office for 3.50 euros, which brings the old legends to life at the touch of a button.
In the summer, the ruins serve as the setting for an outdoor escape room, where you wander through the courtyards and battlements to solve historical puzzles.
Arts and crafts and hiking boots

A real highlight of the annual calendar are the traditional craft markets that take place in the fall and winter. The well-known Burgadvent, held on the first three weekends of November, transforms the ancient walls into an atmospheric pre-Christmas marketplace.
In addition, the trip can be wonderfully combined with a hike, as the fortress is located directly on the famous Wachau World Heritage Trail. A particularly beautiful loop hike starts in the village of Aggsbach. It leads steeply uphill along the shaded Herrenweg to the castle in just under 1.5 hours, before returning to the starting point via the leisurely Kartäuserweg.
