Those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city on the weekend will find a perfect combination of nature and wildlife in the northern Waldviertel region. Just under an 80-minute drive from Vienna, the striking round towers of a complex rise up — a complex first mentioned in historical records in 1258. Where thick walls once provided protection against attacks, giant birds of prey now soar freely through the skies.
The historic Waldreichs Castle near the village of Franzen is now home to a professional falconry and raptor center. Although the castle itself serves as the headquarters of the local forestry administration and can only be viewed from the outside, the expansive animal enclosure surrounding it attracts many visitors. Here, there are no antique furnishings; instead, the imposing kings of the skies are the main focus of your visit.
Rare eagle owls and spectacular free flights

The large aviaries and the tranquil owl park are home to rare Siberian eagle owls, golden eagles, and red kites, among others. The daily work of the animal keepers is based on a close bond, which you can experience live during the free-flight demonstrations at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. When a massive eagle glides just a few meters above your heads, it illustrates the sheer power of these animals very clearly.

Anyone wishing to combine the outing with culture should mark the upcoming Pentecost weekend (May 24 and 25) in their calendar right away. During the special Pentecost music weekend at the Bird of Prey Center, musical performances will accompany the daily flight shows.
But even during the rest of the year, the historic grounds regularly transform into a stage. In August, for example, the renowned Allegro Vivo Chamber Music Festival takes over the former castle chapel. Another highlight is the open-air hunting concert, where you can make yourself comfortable with your own picnic blanket right in front of the ruins.
In addition to the shows, the facility’s own golden eagle center is dedicated to the intensive breeding and conservation of these species. Those seeking more detailed information can learn at the historic falconry museum how this form of hunting has developed as an important cultural asset since the Middle Ages. There you’ll also find an engaging educational trail that’s perfect for a family outing with children.
