Anyone who builds a fortress on a 482-meter-high volcanic rock obviously doesn’t want any unannounced visitors. This architectural tactic paid off, as the massive structure in the hilly landscape of southeastern Styria was never conquered by enemies. Today, things are different, as you no longer have to fight your way past soldiers. Riegersburg Castle in Styria has been owned by the Liechtenstein family since 1650. Today, it is easily accessible to the public. You can either conquer the 90-meter elevation gain in about 15 to 20 minutes via the historic castle path or take it easy and use the inclined elevator built in 2003.
Dark secrets and real blades

Once you reach the top, three different museums await your exploration. In the Castle Museum, you’ll learn about the life of Elisabeth Katharina von Galler. She resided here from 1638 as an independent lady of the castle and was nicknamed “Schlimme Liesl” (Mean Liesl). Things take a much darker turn in the Witch Museum, which examines the Feldbach witch trials of 1673 to 1675 in an extremely objective and historically accurate manner.
The Weapons Museum offers a hands-on experience where you’re expressly allowed to pick up pieces of armor, sabers, and swords from the 17th century yourself. If the youngest guests aren’t in the mood for history, simply send them on a scavenger hunt with the castle ghost Rüdiger to search for seven hidden letters.

Steep cliffs and birds of prey on the rocks

If simply looking at armor isn’t enough for you, you can get active on the rock itself. The 170-meter-long Leopold via ferrata leads directly up over the volcanic rock and requires about 40 minutes of climbing. Those who prefer a more leisurely pace should stop by the bird of prey sanctuary on the grounds, where precise flight demonstrations take place Monday through Saturday at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
After the tour, the castle tavern serves a hearty snack with homemade, regional dishes and the castle’s own wine. The complex is still open daily from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM this year (as of May 2026). For a comprehensive experience, get the Prince Ticket for 36.90 euros for adults, which includes all museums, the outdoor grounds, and the air show.
