Anyone looking for true relaxation away from the paved streets in June will find a small natural wonder just a few minutes’ walk from Vienna Central Station. There, in a very small space, grow plants that one would otherwise have to climb with great effort to reach on distant, rocky mountain peaks. Over 4,000 plant species from alpine regions around the world are thus spread out over an area of approximately 2,500 square meters.
Peak blooming season in early summer
This early summer, the area is at its most colorful, as the high-mountain flora is currently in its peak blooming season. You ’ll stroll along winding paths past brilliant blue gentians, pink alpine roses, and blooming saxifrages— after all, these plants come from all over the world. Even the rare edelweiss can be viewed up close without needing hiking boots.
However, this historic collection was by no means founded for modern mass tourism. Its roots stretch far back to the early 19th century, when Archduke Johann had the first alpine plant treasures in the Austrian mountains systematically collected. In addition, this time-honored institution actively saves endangered plant species today, for example by participating in a global seed exchange program.

Centuries-old tree art in hiding
In addition to the colorful flowers, a completely different, must-see attraction awaits you in the back of the grounds. It is an extensive bonsai collection with over 100 specimens, as some of the miniatures are already over a century old. A historic Japanese white pine is a proud 180 years old, yet looks absolutely vibrant.
However, a visit to the Alpine Garden at the Belvedere is a completely different experience from the classic palace stroll next door. The atmosphere is noticeably wilder and more untamed as you hike among the rugged rock formations, with the dense canopy of leaves perfectly muffling the city noise. That’s why those seeking peace and quiet will find a green oasis here for just a 4.50 euro admission fee.
If you want to see the current splendor of the blooms, you shouldn’t wait too long, as the season is short-lived. So pack your camera, grab a good book, and enjoy this historic garden in the third district.
