When people think of French Impressionists, they usually picture Paris or Normandy. Hardly anyone expects to find a genuine piece of Giverny in the middle of Vienna’s 22nd district. Although we are separated from the original by over a thousand kilometers, there is a green oasis out here in Donaustadt that captures exactly this atmosphere. Between 1999 and 2002, an area was created here that brings the famous water lily paintings to life. This is the Claude Monet Garden, nestled within the 60,000-square-meter Kagran school gardens.
What makes it special is that this place is not a mere replica, but serves as an educational garden for shade-loving plants, while visitors stroll past ponds and wooden bridges.
Botanical Diversity in the 22nd District
Since the entire site serves as a training ground for the vocational school for horticulture and floristry, absolute precision is the order of the day here. Gardener apprentices have been learning their craft here since 1928, although the historic orangery was completed as early as 1912. Because the area is used for training, however, access is restricted, and visitors may find themselves standing before closed gates regardless of the time of year.

From Vegetable Patch to Garden Tree Museum
Historically, the school had to switch to a war economy in 1939, which is why the students at the time grew almost exclusively vegetables to feed the population. In the meantime, however, the spacious grounds have undergone a complete transformation. Today, alongside the French model, you can discover , for example, a Shakespeare garden, a Greek section, or an impressive Asian area .
In addition, since 2003, the old, extensively renovated orangery has housed the Austrian Horticultural Museum, which displays historical artifacts and tools across 500 square meters of exhibition space. Although admission to all these themed gardens is completely free, you’ll need to plan your visit carefully. From April to October, it’s only open on the first Thursday of every month.
If you visit in July and August, however, extended opening hours apply from Wednesday to Friday. After all, the Vienna City Gardens want as many people as possible to experience this splendor while school is out. No advance registration is required.
