If you’re in the mood for crisp stone fruit in the summer, you’ll often find that the produce at the supermarket isn’t all that fresh, even though the region has so much to offer. But just a short drive on the A2 will take you straight to a large fruit orchard. For nearly 20 years, the owners produced exclusively for the wholesale market. But now they’re finally opening their gates directly to all sweet tooths. So starting Saturday, June 20, 2026, at 8:00 a.m., you can fill your baskets there. Picking your own fruit is fun and guarantees the freshest quality —straight from the branch to your snack table at home. The exact location is the Hinteregger family’s cherry orchard in Styria’s Thermenland region.
Small trees, great variety

Because the trees there are deliberately kept small, harvesting is a breeze for young and old alike. If you don’t have your own bucket, the farm provides suitable picking buckets so that no one goes home empty-handed.
However, you don’t necessarily have to climb the ladder yourself. Since there are also pre-harvested boxes available for immediate purchase, those in a hurry will find exactly what they’re looking for. For larger orders, however, the family asks that you contact them briefly in advance.

From Firmred to Kordia

The variety of cherries available on site is impressive, with each variety having its own unique character. The season kicks off with the California variety Firmred, which stands out for its extremely high sugar content of 16–18°Brix. Next up are the well-known Kordia heart cherries with their particularly rich aroma.
As the late-season Regina variety ripens, you’ll get wonderfully glossy fruit with a sweetness of up to 19°Brix. In addition, the Satin variety offers a well-balanced flavor experience in the mid-early season. This ensures culinary variety throughout the entire season.
Important tips for your trip

The orchard is conveniently located not far from the Ilz highway exit and is clearly signposted. There’s plenty of parking available, so you can park your car comfortably and safely. Finally, don’t forget to wear sturdy shoes and bring adequate sun protection.
